What to include: iOS version, Observing Notebook version, what you were doing, what you expected, what happened. Screenshots welcome.
Observing Notebook is an offline, no-account observing logbook for amateur astronomers. Keep a durable record of your sessions and what you saw against a bundled deep-sky catalog (Messier, Caldwell, curated bright NGC, the planets and the Moon), track observing-program checklists, see a deterministic "visible tonight" list for your location and date, and export everything to CSV/JSON. No subscription, no sign-in — your log stays entirely on your device.
Go to the Log tab and tap Add Session. Record the night's conditions — seeing, transparency, Bortle class, temperature — and pick your location and gear. Then add observations to the session: choose a target from the bundled catalog (or type a free-text target), pick the eyepiece (the app computes the magnification from your scope and eyepiece focal lengths), and rate the view with difficulty and a star rating, plus any sketch note. The observation appears in the session and, if the target is on an observing list, ticks off that list's progress.
The Tonight tab is the light planner. Pick a date and one of your saved locations, and the app computes — entirely on your device — which catalog objects are above the horizon during astronomical night, with their rise, set, and transit times and a "how high it gets" max-altitude badge. You can filter the list by observing list or object type, then start a session targeting what's up. It also shows the Moon phase for the date, because a full Moon washes out faint deep-sky objects.
The Lists tab holds observing programs — Messier 110, Caldwell 109, plus any custom list you build. Progress is derived automatically from your observations: log M31 once and the Messier list shows it checked off (for example, "Messier 47/110"). Tapping an object you haven't observed yet jumps you straight to logging it. This is the feature that turns the app into a club-program tracker without any spreadsheet.
Yes — completely. The whole app, including the bundled catalog and every visibility calculation, works with no network at all (airplane mode is fine). There is no cloud, no account, and no server in the loop. Your log lives on your device, full stop.
Open Settings → Gear Presets and add a scope (aperture and focal length) plus your eyepieces and any filters. When you log an observation you pick the gear and eyepiece, and the app fills in the magnification for you (scope focal length ÷ eyepiece focal length). You can keep multiple gear presets for different rigs.
Open Settings → Locations (you also set a default one during onboarding). Give the location a name and its latitude and longitude, and optionally its Bortle class. The coordinates drive the rise/set/transit and "visible tonight" math on the Tonight tab. Locations are entered by you and stay on your device — the app does not read your GPS or send your location anywhere.
Open Settings → Export and choose CSV or JSON. The app builds a file with your full log — sessions, observations, gear, locations, and list progress — and hands it to the standard iOS share sheet, so you can save it to Files, email it to yourself, or AirDrop it. Because there is no cloud sync in this version, export is also your backup: keep a copy somewhere safe and you can never lose your records.
Yes. Open Settings and turn on the night-mode theme — a deep-red, true-dark look designed to protect your dark adaptation at the eyepiece so the phone doesn't blind you mid-session.
The bundled catalog is assembled from public-domain astronomical facts — object designations, coordinates, magnitudes, and sizes — covering all 110 Messier objects, all 109 Caldwell objects, a curated set of bright NGC showpieces, and the planets and Moon as loggable reference entries. The curated NGC selection draws in part on OpenNGC (CC-BY-SA 4.0), attributed in the app's About screen. It all ships inside the app and loads offline.
In version 1.0 the planets and Moon are loggable reference entries with Moon-phase information, but their precise rise/set positions for a given night need a higher-precision ephemeris than the fixed-coordinate deep-sky math the app uses. Automated planet/Moon "tonight" positioning is planned for a later version. Fixed-coordinate objects (Messier, Caldwell, NGC) get full deterministic rise/set/transit today.
Open Settings → Reset Observing Notebook. The action is irreversible and removes every session, observation, gear preset, location, observing list, and preference from the app's sandbox on your device. Deleting the app from iOS achieves the same on-device result. Export to CSV/JSON first if you want to keep your records.
Only you can. We hold nothing on any server, so there is nothing for us to restore from, and this version has no iCloud sync. If you migrated via an encrypted iPhone backup (iTunes/Finder or iCloud Backup), the app's local data should restore with it. The most reliable safeguard is to export your log to CSV/JSON periodically and keep that file somewhere safe — that copy is portable and yours.

Open Instellingen → Observing Notebook resetten.
