Observing
Notebook
An offline field logbook for amateur astronomers. Plan tonight's deep-sky session from a deterministic “visible tonight” list, log fast at the eyepiece, and track Messier & Caldwell progress — no account, no cloud, no subscription.
The field notebook serious observers actually need.
Plan tonight, offline
See which deep-sky objects are actually visible from your location tonight. The planner computes rise, set, transit and maximum altitude for every Messier, Caldwell and curated NGC/IC object — with airplane mode on. Pick your targets and start a planned session in one tap.
Log fast at the eyepiece
Quick-log captures what matters in seconds: target, rating, short note and time. The full form — eyepiece, filter, seeing, transparency, Bortle class, sketch note — is there when you want it, out of your way when you don't. Defaults carry over from your last session.
Offline deep-sky catalog
All 110 Messier objects, all 109 Caldwell objects, a curated set of bright NGC/IC showpieces, plus the planets and the Moon as reference entries — bundled and available with no signal. Each object detail shows tonight's rise/set/transit and your full observation history.
Progress that's real
The built-in Messier and Caldwell checklists derive progress from what you actually logged — not a manual tally. Log M31 once and the list ticks itself, “47/110”. Build custom lists for your club program or a personal project; filter by visible tonight, unobserved, type or constellation.
Built for the dark
A true-black background with deep-red controls protects your dark adaptation at the eyepiece, so the phone doesn't blind you mid-session. The night-mode theme is one toggle away in Settings.
Export & own your data
Export your full log to CSV or JSON via the iOS share sheet any time — AirDrop it, email it, save it to Files. Offline by design: works in a dark-sky field, works on a plane. Your records are yours, in your format.
What you'll actually see.
No account.
No cloud.
No tracking.
Your observing log shouldn't live in someone else's cloud. Observing Notebook collects no data — the App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected. Nothing leaves your device unless you explicitly export it. No telemetry, no crash reporter phoning home, no analytics SDK. Your records belong to you.

Frequently asked questions
What does Observing Notebook do?
It is an offline observing logbook for amateur astronomers. Plan tonight's session from a deterministic “visible tonight” list of Messier, Caldwell and curated NGC/IC objects computed on your device, log fast at the eyepiece, browse the offline catalog, and track Messier/Caldwell program progress derived from what you actually logged.
Is it a planetarium or a star map?
No. Observing Notebook is not a planetarium — there is no real-time sky, no star map and no mount control. It's the durable field notebook that serious observers currently approximate with a spreadsheet or paper, built to record what you saw and track your observing programs.
Does it work offline, without an account?
Yes. The whole app — the deep-sky catalog and every rise/set/transit and “visible tonight” calculation — runs entirely on your device with airplane mode on. There is no account, no signup and no backend. Nothing leaves your phone unless you export a file yourself.
How does the “visible tonight” planner work?
Pick a date and one of your saved locations, and a pure-Swift engine computes — on-device, with no network — which catalog objects are above the horizon during astronomical night, with rise, set and transit times and a max-altitude badge. It also shows the Moon phase, because a full Moon washes out faint deep-sky objects.
How do the Messier and Caldwell checklists work?
Progress is derived automatically from your observations, never a manual tally. Log M31 once and the Messier list shows it checked off (for example, “47/110”). Tapping an object you haven't observed jumps you straight to logging it. You can also build custom lists for a club program.
Is there a subscription?
No. Observing Notebook is a one-time purchase with no subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads and no tracking, ever.
Which devices does it support?
It runs on iPhone and iPad on iOS 17 and later.

Notebook
